They say God works in mysterious ways and whether or not one may believe in God, one can be certain that miracles do happen. Often we do not know how, when and why someone will come to our aid when we desperately need it. Here’s an incident that will reinstate your belief in miracles and also in the saying that ‘God often comes in human form’; if not on God then your faith in luck is sure to be restored.

An eight day old baby girl was fighting for life at a private hospital in Dibrugarh, Assam and if there had to be any hopes of saving her life then she had to be rushed to the national capital. Air-lifting a child on life support system whose battery was dying is in itself a daunting task. Added to this was the problem of Delhi traffic during a Saturday evening; that too during the wedding season. The entire operation seemed difficult to pull off and nothing short of a miracle would ensure success. Faced with this eventuality and the life of the infant on the line, Dr. Bhaskar Papukon Gogoi began pulling all stops to ensure the child was given a green corridor. A green corridor is a traffic free passage which is usually reserved only for VVIPS in case of extreme emergencies. Having drawn a blank till the evening of March 3rd, Dr. Bhaskar had no idea how he would make this happen.

The next day the little girl was taken from Aditya Hospital to Dibrugarh airport as scheduled and the air ambulance left for Delhi. Dr. Gogoi then contacted India Today correspondent Kaushik Deka in a desperate bid to do something so that the infant’s life could be saved. Deka too made all the important calls to contacts he considered would be of help but drew only negative responses. Having failed at all attempts, with the air ambulance already on the way. Dr. Gogoi and Deka decided to knock on PM Modi’s doors. The shot off an email to Delhi Police special commissioner for traffic Ajay Kashyap and Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik while marking a copy to PM Modi’s personal email ID. Chances of a reply looked slim because the PM and his team were busy with election campaigning in Varanasi.  When the ambulance landed to refuel at Lucknow it was already 6 PM and there was no sign of any reply from the PM. However, soon Dr. Gogoi and Deka received calls from Mr. Kashyap and Mr. Patnaik to acquire details of the air ambulance and other details. The child reached Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in the nick of time, with just 7 minutes of battery left on the support system.

The infant suffers from a medical condition known as ‘meconium aspiration syndrome’, a condition where the first stool enters the lungs and prolonged inhalation of the contaminated fluid could turn fatal. For the child’s parents, father Dhurbajyoti Kalita and mother Himakshi Saharia, this rescue operation is nothing short of a miracle.

The in-time response of PM Modi despite his busy schedule helped save a young life. Kudos also to journalists like Mr. Kaushik Deka who came to the rescue of an unknown kid from Assam. It is stories like these that restore our faith in humanity and of course miracles. The parents of the child have thanked the PM for his help.
