Marks DO matter, dear students!

Marks DO matter, dear students. Sorry, but it’s just the harsh truth of life. You may tell yourself they don’t to comfort yourself, but sorry, they just do.

My marks mattered – when I was in 12th, 14 years ago. I scored 66% – JUST enough to get the laaaaaast “free seat” mechanical engineering seat in Mysore, close shave. If I had scored more, I could have gotten into a better college, been surrounded by smarter brains and brought myself up their level, scored more, gotten a better job, been at a better station in life – it would have caused a chain reaction of betterment. Thankfully, I took an alternative career path in the form of standup comedy which has been very fruitful (touch wood), but not everyone is so lucky. It has become fashionable these days to act rebellious and “follow your dreams” and dismiss the education system as “broken” – but people… let’s be pragmatic here. Your marks don’t necessarily represent your mastery of the subjects, but they are also a reflection of how well you react and perform when presented with a challenge.

You think the school education system is unfair? LOL! Wait till you get into college. And wait till you get into an actual job. And I won’t even get into the relationships and social life bit. Nothing is perfect, you’re not in a fairytale. In the words of Bill Gates – “Life is unfair, get used to it!” Yes, get used to it and if you feel a situation is unfair… you just have to swallow the harsh truth and work with it.

WELCOME TO ADULT LIFE!!

If you’re not happy with your marks, if you feel disappointed… this is just the beginning. Grow a thick skin and prepare yourself for the many many many disappointments and failures you will face in life, that’s just how life works, learn to be a fighter, don’t let this put you down. Whatever happened, has happened – make the best out of a bad situation, strive to do your best from now on, keep marching. Cheers and be grateful for the things you have.
